So I know that what you all really want to know on the first day of my new job is what my new office looks like.
First, though, I have to show you what Jason has done to my WPL office:
I guess he moved in the nanosecond he saw the door shut on my way out last Tuesday. At least he didn’t take down that bulletin board I’ve been moving around since I was a teenager. I thought about taking it down and taking it with me, but I decided that I could live without it.
And now what you’ve all been waiting for, my new office:
Here’s the view from my desk, in which you can see the flowers and cookies and mugs and cards and tote bag that people gave me today:
Not pictured here is the Edible Arrangement Terri sent, as I almost immediately started eating it. Terri knows me well.
Other things you might note about my office are the presence of a window as well as a thermostat of my very own, so now I feel like I have my own climate, which is exactly what I’ve always wanted.
Friends and former coworkers were texting and emailing and Facebooking me good wishes all day, and my new coworkers are all so welcoming and helpful. People have been supporting and celebrating with me through this whole process, and it’s been such a positive and joyful experience. Today could have been overwhelming, but it was fun. I met and talked to my new colleagues and explored the library. I learned about the summer reading program and answered some reference questions. I had cake in the morning and ate lunch outside in the shade.
I have a lot more to learn and do, but I couldn’t have asked for a better start.
I am also starting my days with this song by Daniel Handler, to keep me on task.

YAY! This makes my heart happy.
Very fancy!
I’m glad you had such a wonderful day!
I always thought being able to control the weather would be a fairly awesome super power. Having your own thermostat seems like a good step towards that.
Ditto what Jules said :)!
Thanks, all! My heart’s pretty happy, too.
Jen, For a couple years, we had Maxwell convinced that I did control the weather, but then he caught on to me.
Very nice:-)
Thanks, Mom!
Huzzah! This is a lovely space. I covet your purple chairs…
My observations….1)those binders on the back wall look scary :( 2)funky carpet…you need some easy chairs to match :) 3) I like the “hall tree” (place to hang your coat, scarves & hats :)
It’s lovely Adrienne! Glad to see you’re getting settled in :)
Sara, I really like having that table there, too. It’s right by the door and window, and it’s a nice place to sit with people and talk about stuff, which seems to be a big part of my job so far.
Laureen, I thought that tree was for puppets. ;) And I haven’t gotten down any of those binders yet, although I think I have to today.
Colleen, Thank you!
Congrats! But not a magic 8-ball in sight??
Very nice Adrienne!! I’m sure you will fit in very well in your new job, just as you did at WPL..enjoy your first week.
I actually had to wait until Saturday to move over properly, but you don’t want to let prime real estate like that sit unoccupied for too long. I never realized that bulletin board was yours! It’s very useful; thanks for leaving it. As well as the Edward Gorey poster. My Star Wars poster is up right next to it and they are very happy together.
Fab office! I’m so happy for you.
This is all so lovely. I want to hear about the edible arrangement, please (and distract you to look the other way for a few moments). I’m glad you had a good day!
Jen, I’m going to start bringing in my 8 Balls next week. They don’t know about them at HPL yet.
Linda, Thanks!
Jason, I see you have at long last learned something from me, and of course Edward Gorey goes well with everything.
Sarah, Thanks!
Farida, Oh, it was so yummy. My favorite pieces were the pineapple flowers with cantaloupe centers. Mmmmm.
