I Came to HPL with a Dream

My dream was to get the upholstered furniture cleaned.

Today, that dream is coming true.

I would like to thank the people who helped me along the way, my friends and family and colleagues here in the library and beyond. I would like to thank coffee for giving me a reason to get out of bed every day.

I can pretty much retire now, except first I just have to quickly finish completely transforming the library–and, ideally, a bunch of other libraries–to ensure they’re ready to tackle an uncertain and rapidly-changing future.

I think that may be an easier goal to accomplish than getting the upholstered furniture cleaned.

But maybe not as satisfying as clean chairs.

Oh, wow. I’m now scared to ask how often that gets done…!

Perhaps best not to know, Tanita, but I’m going to attempt to stay on top of it. I think clean and comfortable places to sit are kind of critical for a public library.

You may say I’m a dreamer, Kevin, but I’m not the only one.

So we should judge libraries on the content of their collections & the cleanliness of their chairs?

If the chairs aren’t clean, you won’t want to stay and read something. That’s my logic.

I was reminded of your post when I heard this story on NPR this morning: http://www.npr.org/2012/10/23/163414069/americas-facebook-generation-is-reading-strong

It seems that library furniture is a trending topic this week (at least in the small solar system of “things I pay attention to”).

    Same with me, Stephanie.

That report is very interesting. The library world’s been a-buzz with it today.
