The Proper Care and Handling of Antiques

Some years ago, I came into possession of one of my late grandmother’s antique marble-topped coffee tables. Before I moved, I had it in a corner of the downstairs living room, where no one ever saw or used it. One thing I love about my new place is that the coffee table fits perfectly right in the middle of the living room, in front of the couch.

The Proper Use of Antiques

That way, now I can pile crap on it, the way everyone does with valuable family heirlooms.

I can tell by this table that your grandmother was a different sort of woman. But with the crap I can’t tell what shape it is. I finally actually wrote another antiques blog post, and coincidentally I wrote about how I’m dealing with my crap:

But overall, I would say, it looks lovely in your living room – crap & all!

My grandmother was, indeed, a different sort of woman. I’ll try to get a shot of the table minus the crap for you at some point. It is quite lovely. One of my movers was ready to run off with it, he liked it so much (though it is heavy and difficult to run off with).

Thanks for the link to your blog. I need to catch up!

It’s all wood floors in here, and then there are the high ceilings and huge windows and all. I’m not roughing it.
