So a five-year-old boy came up to the reference desk this afternoon and asked me for train books. My emotional response to this was, “YES, I can show you those. I LOVE TRAIN BOOKS!!!”
That wasn’t really about the train books.
It was about the fact that I know how to help a five-year-old find train books, which is what I did.
It was February Break week here this week, and so I had a lot of opportunities like this to help kids find stuff. We found Captain Underpants, Clementine, and the 39 Clues. I got a teenager started on Stephen King. I was even happy to visit the stupid Boxcar Children a couple times. I had a conversation with a kid about how awesome The Westing Game is, and I talked with another one about mythology and different versions of the story of Icarus.
I love so many things about my new job, but talking with kids about books is something I will always love.
It was a fun week.

Thanks! I love that tumblr.
The Westing Game _is_ awesome. And so are you.
This is great! I miss talking with kids about books (though I sometimes get the chance with people who are not my own kid).
Speaking of my own kid, she just finished reading Inkspell tonight. I am currently reading Inkheart. She was sniffling, and she told me why she was sad, then apologized for “spoiling” the surprise for me. I said I could handle it, but advised her not to reveal key plot points to her contemporaries.
I still remember reading the Westing Game in 6th grade. I always get nervous re-reading books I loved as a kid because they don’t always hold up. But, maybe I’ll try the Westing Game again ….
Thanks, Little Willow! You are awesome, too. :)
Farida, I also got a couple in their 50s who likes listening to fantasy on audio started on Inkheart this week. God bless adults who aren’t too cool to listen to awesome children’s books.
Jen, I would have loved Westing Game when I was a kid, but I didn’t read it until a couple years ago. I was surprised by how risky a book it is and so very, very good.
