The Bus Test

When I'm a couple chapters into a book I’m not particularly enjoying, I often ask myself, “If these characters were suddenly hit by a bus, would I care?” If the answer’s no, I go find a new book.

This rule applies equally well to films such as Young Adam, The Piano, and 21 Grams.

It doesn't apply so neatly to library patrons.

now that "THE BUS" has left the Steelers, does this mean we have to get a new football team?

Oh, Dorothy! How we miss you at work! They have not hired ANY new Firefly fans. I keep telling Judy to add "What's your favorite TV show?' to the list of interview questions, but she won't.

Perhaps this is the test Lucas uses to determine who is worthy to talk to and who is not. Too bad I can't use the same test with who I have to interact with at work, at least I do not have to go back for a while.

Many of my co-workers don't pass the bus test. Erin does though. She and I used to share a cube and would sometimes go days without saying anything more than hello and good bye, but it was still kind of reassuring to have her there. Her new cube is right outside my office now and it's still kind of nice knowing she's there, but I'd still trade my office for our cube again.

Have you explained "the bullshit meter?"which you've mentioned as often over the years as "the bus"?I pretty much use both now to decide who I will talk to.Thanks for the tips!

I think everyone should read On Bullshit, it is a great essay on the prominence and increasing amount of bullshit in our culture. It is a very short book available at a fine public library near you.

Whenever I really want to see bullshit that is truely excellent,I watch any of the network news shows,or listen to our unelected president,or politicians in general are most excellent at using many words to say nothing at all! It's really quite amazing!

Well, it looks like I missed the bus. But in a really good book, some characters you should desperately WANT to be hit by a bus. Well, at least one.

what???!!! you want ewan macgregor to get hit by a bus??? (sorrow)
and i have to confess (die hard star wars fan that i am) that i wouldn't have been upset if anakin had been hit by a bus in either episode 2 or 3, but i still think it's a good story. and when you read the comics, anakin's character is fleshed out so much better and it makes you feel a lot sadder that obi wan leaves him behind without putting him out of his misery or anything and when anakin yells, "i hate you!!" ugh. it's making me feel sad even as i write. but anyway, it's more because of the comics (and a little from the clone wars cartoon series- though they fight droids more than they develop their interpersonal jedi relationships).
hmmm. suddenly i find myself in this comment quite far thematically from where i started.
anyway, ewan macgregor shouldn't get hit by a bus.
