Library Patrons, Part Four: The Vigilante

Patron: Do you have the movie Falling Down?
Librarian: I love that movie! Do you want it on VHS or DVD?
Patron: DVD.
Librarian: Oh, no, it looks like it’s overdue.
Patron: When was it due?
Librarian: Two weeks ago.
Patron: Can’t you call the person who has it and tell them to bring it back?
Librarian: Well, they get a phone call or an email to let them know the item’s overdue and then if they keep it out long enough, we bill them to replace it.
Patron: When do you bill them?
Librarian: Oh, I can never remember. A couple months or something.
Patron: Well, why don’t you call them now?
Librarian: I can’t do that.
Patron: Can you give me their number?
Librarian: No.
Patron: Their name?
Librarian: No.
Patron: Well, we have to do something.
Librarian: I can place a hold and get it from another library.

I'd say that was unbelievable if it hadn't happen to me... more than once. I love how some people want us to go to the offender's house personally and snatch the overdue materials out of their hands. Who do they think we are?
Librarian Avenger! Out to save the world from its overdue and missing books!

Chuck probably has it. I love my husband (I'll never get used to calling him that), but he's not good at returning things. He does kick-ass at planning trips! If you've never been to Minneapolis, you must go! And if you do go, you must visit The Global Market. (http://www.midtownglobalmarket.org/)

In the not too distant past, the overdues clerk at Ogden used to send the Ogden Police Chief to the homes of people who had a certain number of books overdue. Said clerk retired in 1999.

You have to admire a police chief who would take the time to do that and the clerk who would ask for it.

The Onion is really boring this week. WTF?

I do actually understand this response, even though it’s inappropriate. It’s difficult to learn that you can’t get what you want/need because someone else isn’t following the rules. It’s a small example of the sort of injustice that goes on all the time in life, and it’s much easier to try to deal with this kind of an injustice than some of the bigger ones we see in the world. And, really, people should bring the library’s stuff back.

It's also kind of flattering when someone thinks that I have it in me to be intimidating enough to convince someone to return their overdue materials.

I agree with you, Chuck. I forget to read it a lot of weeks, but I remembered yesterday and was completely disappointed.

If *I* wrote for The Onion, that would never happen.

I just tried to borrow that from Webster this last week! I have also been in queue for Death Wish for 5 weeks now. Maybe next time the patron comes in you can try to pawn off a copy of Dirty Harry on them.

I always thought that the library detective was a pretty good idea.

If the Onion ever gets boring...there is always this article to remember. All should be forgiven if someone can ever come up wtih something so brilliant:

Also, the headlines this week are hilarious. Didn't get the chance to read the articles though.

Greg, It's comforting to know that someone understands me every now and again. Of course, I could also go the Batman route with the request, probably the original Tim Burton version.
