Um, But Aren't I Me?

Thanks to Fuse #8, we have the rare second watat.com post of the day....

How many have your name?

I tried that site out and there are 3 people in the U.S. with my name. I can't believe that they came up with 0 for you, after all you do exist.........so that makes at least 1 doesn't it? But it was fun anyway to check out names, thanks.

This silly thing is awfully fun. I checked on all the Pritchard names, too, and it turns out that Tammy doesn't exist, either. It kind of gives, "I'm nobody. Who are you?" a whole new meaning....

The thing works on probabilities, it knows how many Adriennes there are and how many Furnesses there are and it decided based on that that the probability of Adrienne being matched with a Furness is statistically zero.

So it isn't that you don't exist, it's just that you're really unlikley. So it's kind of a cool thing to know.

I wonder how much more statistically improbable I become when one adds in the fact that I'm a 32-year-old widowed Children's Librarian who is writing a book on homeschooling.

Statistically speaking, at least accoring to this site, there are almost 2000 of me. Oddly, there's even someone else in my small area of employment with my name (and even someone with my nickname!).

I always like to point out to would be actors who contemplate the move to LA or NY that there at least a dozen people in both places that look exactly like you do. Hell, you are lucky if there are only a dozen. Depending on age, ethnicity, hair colour, etc., there could be hundreds of you out there. It's scary, but true. There is far less variation than you'd think.

And what about things like how it's more likely that the name Patrick is paired with last names like Callahan or McDonald? Just a pure analysis of the number of Patricks and the number of Callahans would not be accurate about how many Patrick Callahans there are.

Statistics is the only branch of math I find truly interesting. Probability is just cool, and other types of statistics can be useful and fun to manipulate.

Even so, all this math talk does make me a bit nervous. I'm obviously going to have to write another post about grammar....

Yeah, it says there are 26 Patrick McNultys in the US. There are five in Rochester alone. With 13,079 McNultys in the US, I'd bet at least 2% of them are Patricks. That would be 262, which still sounds a little low.

There are 371,961 people in the U.S. with the first name Lori.
Statistically the 151st most popular first name. (tied with 2 other first names)
More than 99.9 percent of people with the first name Lori are female.
Apparently not many males out there with my first name. That's comforting to know. Although George B. from maintenance knows one. He must be the .1%

I proved once again that Pritchard is more common than Onderdonk, an on going battle with my husband.

Although the name Adrien Vonderdonk came up as one of the heroes of Manhatten and freedom before the Dutch turned it over to the British, this will require some research since Adrien is an old family name that no one has used in the last few generations. Please note it would be a boy Adrien as opposed to our delightful queen.

I guess I am not as unique as I thought. :)

There are 322,466 people in the U.S. with the first name Shannon.

There are 44,995 people in the U.S. with the last name Case.

There are 48 people with my name in the U.S.A.

I'm a little late on this comment but I thought I'd post anyway... There are 10 other people in the US named "Aaron Noll". But this isn't so funny as the fact that one of them is a school librarian in Michigan! That Aaron Noll is completely unrelated to me and I only know about him from Googling my name. So there are two school librarians in the US named Aaron Noll.

...Say hi to Jason for me!

Hey, Aaron! Good to hear from you!

I was, of course, disturbed to hear of your conversion to the Dark Side of Librarianship, but I imagine you're accomplishing it without actually selling your soul. :) Hope all's well!
