"God Grant Us the Serenity..." or Crap, I Already Used that One
The Webster Public Library is part of the Monroe County Library System, one of those loosey-goosey systems in which libraries elect to be members. It's a bit like the states' relationship to the federal government, except the federal government has way more control over state policies than MCLS has over its member libraries. I mention this because while WPL is part of the same system as the Central Library mentioned in the news items below, WPL has different policies.
And it goes without saying that I don't speak for anyone but me.
One of our local television stations, News 10, used a hidden camera to find a guy looking at porn in our system's Central Library, a guy who happens to be on probation for endangering the welfare of a child. You can see what News 10 has done with the story. You can see, too, that our County Executive responded like an angry mob armed with torches and pitchforks.
I'm struggling with what to say here. The leadership and staff of the Central Library don't want people on probation for endangering the welfare of a child looking at porn in the library. When it comes down to it, I bet they don't want *anyone* looking at porn in the library. I know these people. I mean, look, there's poor Patty being badgered by one of those people from News 10. I hate to see people being treated this way. News 10's story is inflammatory, superficial, and mean-spirited. Maggie Brooks is just posturing. Personally, I think the Central Library needs to revise its Internet policy -- after all, people can get their porn at Weekly World News up the street -- but it's naive to imply that that's going to make the Central Library a safe place. Libraries can filter porn to some degree, but libraries can't filter out the scary people at the door. And it's the people that are the real trouble. Obviously.
Update 2/22/07:
Now the ACLU wants a piece of MCLS. Can you say, "Catch 22"? I *knew* you could.

This was the first thing we talked about at my interview last night. Ack. I told them that even with filtering, people know tricks on how to get through the proxy server, and even just by checking out google images you can get some pretty inappropriate things showing up.
Unfortunately, this is going to get us the publicity that we don't want/need. While we're trying to encourage new people to come and visit, they're going to be afraid that everyone coming in is looking at naughty pictures, and they don't want to expose (har har) their children to that.
I have enough heated conversations about myspace. I don't want to have to convince parents that the library is not a xxx theatre.
BTW no one has mentioned how GROSS it is that someone would want to look at this stuff in public. I mean its implied, but do they think that these librarians are getting their jollys off letting men look at naughty pictures? I think not.

I was listening to this report before I got out of bed this morning & started sputtering so much that Dave changed the channel to keep me from busting the TV. February is a sweeps month, so TV news goes out in search of sensationalism...but this takes the cake.
I'm no fan of porn, but give me a break...how many people actually ask librarians to remove the filters so they can visit porn sites & how many kids stumble across these folks while they're getting their jollies?
I haven't been a big fan of Maggie Brooks & don't live in Monroe County, but it seems to me her outrage is a heck of a smokescreen for all that is NOT getting accomplished there. If she's so hot to protect children, why isn't she outraged about poverty, lead poisoning, domestic violence, kids who wait for school buses in t-shirts in February? Heck, I imagine more children are damaged by potholes than an accidental glimpse of pornography.
I'm sputtering again.

Well yes, but you know its better for kids to freeze to death or get morbidly obese eating nothing but cookies or McDonald's but GOD FORBID they see someone naked or read the word scrotum in a book.
Really, they should be seeking help for the people that want to look at porn in public, not yelling at the library.
But we don't care about the adults that need help. That's not our problem.

Maggie Brooks is a consumate politician and I do not mean that in a nice way. She ran very dirty campaigns in her first few elected positions and let's not forget that republicans have a different view of rights and liberty than other political parties. If parents are with their children there is no danger. With teenagers you can just hope you have taught them well and they will use common sense as they would in any other public place. Other than living in a bubble there is not much you can do.

Yeah, because pulling all the funds for the library is such an effective solution. Why doesn't she just burn it down while she's at it. And those comments about how people don't want their tax money being used to support pornography drive me up a wall! I don't want my taxes being used to kill Iraquis or being used to pay George Bush or Dick Cheney, but that kind of logic tends be lost on those kinds of people. It's such a pointless topic to bring up. War is far worse than pornography will ever be.
Here's an idea...if the content filters aren't very good at the library, why not trying to fund it more so they library can come up with better solutions for either filtering or moving those interested in looking at unfiltered content elsewhere in the library.

Forget Catch 22... can you say "We're famous!"

Just kidding!
But seriously, they need to deal with a way bigger problem they're having at Central. All those little people with sticky fingers that look at all those books with the lewd, bright pictures and that fart all the time and keep asking me "Why Ms. Cathy? Why?"
