It's NOT Just Me
I'm sure you all remember how I wrote an article called "Everything's Coming Up Sock Monkeys" for the last issue of The Edge of the Forest. (You read that, right? Jen Robinson called the article "unexpected," which I LOVED since I am, if nothing else, a woman of mystery.) Anyway, within 24 hours of TEOTF going live, Alkelda the Gleeful from Saints and Spinners told me about this new book called... Everything's Coming Up Sock Monkeys by Bonnie Kraus Connelly. Within hours of that, I had an email from Ms. Connelly herself, who is perfectly lovely. We shared some of our fondness for sock monkeys, and I sent her a photo of his wonderful display of sock monkeys and other creatures at the Strong Museum. And that, my friends, is why the Internet is so cool.
Bonnie's looking at sock monkeys from a cultural and historical perspective, and she knows A LOT more about sock monkeys than I do. Enthusiasts will want to check out her book and her web site.

The internet is a wondrous place indeed. I just received my copy of Everything's Coming Up Sock Monkeys and am enjoying it. My first sock monkey was made by an aunt who (for some reason) left off the ears. I've gotten many rude comments over the years regarding the looks of my beloved sock monkey, but I've responded in the most mature way I know how: I stuck my tongue out at them. Nyah.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Next time, I'll have you over for tea.

Here's to women of mystery! And sock monkeys. Maybe I shouldn't have found the article unexpected, but somehow, I did...

Adrienne, that was a good piece in the Edge. I love sock monkeys and even used to make them when I was a kid. I'm also right fond of other crafty things like little aprons for bottles of dish soap and crocheted toilet-paper-roll covers, but I haven't seen many of those in a while. Maybe I should try Ebay...

Oh, thanks! I still make sock monkeys, Susan, although poorly. I made the one pictured here about a year and a half ago, and I'm ever-so-proud to report that it's still holding together. My sewing "skills" are such that I'm always amazed that things I sew don't immediately fall apart.
"Unexpected" is, without question, totally positive. :) I'll take that any day.
