The Pros and Cons of Sandra Bullock

When I was writing about Premonition yesterday, I wanted to say that I was a Sandra Bullock fan, but then I realized that I didn’t really know if I was or not. There’s only one way to find out.

Pros
Speed (I normally hate action films, but this one also starred Keanu Reeves, which means I loved it.)
While You Were Sleeping (Whatever, it was cute.)
Hope Floats (Harry Connick Jr. Shut up.)
Practical Magic (Hoffman fans were up in arms about this, but I've only read one Hoffman novel in my life and it wasn't this one. Plus I actually am a Nicole Kidman fan.)
The Prince of Egypt (Really? I don't remember her voice in the film, but I remember I liked the film, so it goes in the "pro" column.)
28 Days (Pretty good. I didn't hate it.)
Miss Congeniality and Miss Congeniality 2 (They made me laugh -- mostly because that's how stupid they were, but still.)
Crash (Who knew she had that in her?)

Cons
The Net (You want me to believe that Sandra Bullock can't get a date? Puh-leeze.)
Speed 2 (No Keanu.)
Premonition (See previous post.)

This is why I don't normally base my decisions on lists of pros and cons: most of the films in the "pros" column don't have much to do with Bullock herself. I like several of her movies mostly because I'm fond of her costars, and I liked two of her films because I so enjoyed making fun of them when I watched them. Can those things really count as "pros"? Hard to say. I guess for the time being I'll remain on the fence.

I stopped being a fan after The Net. What an absolutely ridiculous movie. I loved Speed and While You Were Sleeping, though. After the Net, I just stopped paying attention. Although, Miss Congeniality did make me laugh. She is a good comic actress, I'll give her that.

One thing I like about her is the same thing I like about Cameron Diaz -- even though they're beautiful, they're completely willing to frump it up and look stupid. Being occasionally frumpy and stupid myself, they're qualities I appreciate.

Apparently she was extremely good as Harper Lee in Infamous (aka "The Other Truman Capote Movie That Came Out in the Same Year as 'Capote'"). I somehow doubt that she out-Harpered Catherine Keener, though.

I've never been able to believe her in dramatic or romantic roles. Okay, sort of in SPEED, but not much else. I think she's actually okay at comedic work. But I also think she's a pretty screwed up person, so she just un-nverves me in general.

Thanks for the kind words at my blog. You got it right away. Others didn't.

I like her. Yay for the everygirl roles.

Have you seen Love Potion #9 or Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman?

I'm still thinking those good thoughts for you, Little Willow. :)

I don't think I've seen Love Potion #9, but now I have it in my Netflix queue. I'm not sure I've ever heard of Bionic Showdown, but it is just the sort of thing I usually love. It's not available on video or DVD, though. Hard to imagine in this day and age. Alas! They'll have to get it out on DVD eventually, right??? I mean, just today I saw that they're releasing Mork and Mindy on DVD....

One of the best things ever said about and actress was said about her, I don't remember who said it, but it was something like, "she's the kind of girl that all men want to date, but failing that, they would settle for having her as a sister."

But that was before any details of her personal life were known, which Jeffrey chose a perfect word for, it is kind of un-nerveng.
