I Obviously Had to Put This Book on Hold Right Away...

From the BCCB's review for Mysteries of the Mummy Kids by Kelly Milner Halls: "Though more comprehensive information on the main actors is available in other titles, the real value of Halls' work lies in demonstrating just how widespread the incidence of child mummification is, and in surveying the varying reasons that cultures choose to preserve their dead."

Dude, WHAT?!? That definitely wins the Weirdest Book I've Read About Today Award, and I am so totally going to read it. I know better than to get too excited, though. Sometimes book reviews can be just as misleading as movie trailers -- sometimes more misleading since one generally expects book reviews to tell a true story.

Speaking of reviews, get thee over to The Edge of the Forest. There's a new issue, and it rocks.

Well, obviously I'm biased, but I thought the reviewer at BCCB really "got" MYSTERIES OF THE MUMMY KIDS. When I wrote it, I set out to explore not just the death, but the lives of children mummified around the globe. I worked really hard and interviewed a lot of world famous mummy experts to guarantee the readers would get fresh, thoughtful content, rather than rehashed facts. So I hope you like my weird book once you get your hands on it. When I do school and library visits, I tell the kids I get paid for being weird. So I accept that endowment with pride and a big smile. : ) Thanks for even considering the book.

I'm smiling right back. :) Weird is the rule here at watat.com (where my interest in children's books is only eclipsed by my interest in horror films and zombies, so the slightly macabre doesn't bother me), so I can assure you my excitement is genuine. You'll be glad to know that all the c's of the book in my library system are checked out, so I'm actually going to have to wait for someone to return it to get it in my hands. :)

Well, if you like the slightly macabre, you won't be disappointed. And I'll get that copy I promised in the mail to you later today. I can't wait to hear what you think! : )
