The Monster at the End of My Dining Room Table

"Oh, wait, I forgot to show the pictures."

I love this. The enthusiasm, the drama, the sheer delight in reading a book out loud to an appreciative audience. And the cat's "reaction shot"? Priceless.

P.S. Did you know that there are reading therapy dogs? My library used to have one. Her job was to listen faithfully while kids practiced reading. During Halloween, she wore a wizard's hat to be Harry Paw-ter.

He's got an underpaid-but-happy future ahead of him as a children's librarian, I'm thinking.

I have heard of the programs where kids read to dogs (some libraries in our county have done programs like this), and I keep thinking that it might be a fun thing to do. I had some first-hand experience with therapy dogs (and even a cat!) when my late husband had a couple long hospital stays, and so I've seen the benefits they can bring in that context. Lu has also been known to read to Ella from time-to-time. I worry about allergy issues (partly my own, but still).

Eisha, Lucas is always telling me what I should be doing at the library, so he clearly already thinks he knows enough to do my job. One day he told me that I couldn't call storytime "work" because it wasn't "really work."

Actually, he has a point. There have been many times - after a particularly big belly-laugh from a room full of preschoolers, say - when I think to myself "I can't believe they PAY me to do this."

But then, there are those storytimes that take place in the couple of days after Halloween, or during a rainy spell when they haven't been outside to play in 8 days... Oh, we earn our money then, Lucas.

They should give us hazard pay on the day after Halloween.
