“The Next Time I Come In, You Should Get Some More Good Stuff”

Me: Really? Like what?

Kid: You know, COOL stuff.

Me: What’s cool?

Kid: You know. [gestures] Stuff. [rolls eyes] Cool stuff like computers and games and GAME BOYS YES THE NEXT TIME I COME IN YOU SHOULD HAVE GAME BOYS. [walks away]

This kid was, maybe, five. He said “computers” as if it only had one syllable.

I'm trying to work out how computers with one syllable sounds. Don't you already have computers? The kid kind of sounds like a monster.

It was really more like "Pewters."

It's true that we already have computers. I think he was implying that they were inadequate or that we needed more. If it were entirely up to me, I'd get rid of the computers. They're kind of a pain in my neck. Everyone wants them to be something they're not, and little littles are always banging on them.

What will these kids ask for next? Amazing how the "I want more" adds up for kids.

Have a wonderful 2008.

And a happy 2008 to you, Vivian! Yes, it's funny to hear what some kids expect from the library, although what's *really* fun are all those 4th-6th graders in my Library Club telling me that they pretty much come to the library to get books. Yay, books!

Love it!!! It's great that you record these little interactions. There are so many classic conversations that we youth services librarians have on a daily basis. So funny and cute!

I saw that you are on Goodreads too and requested your friendship : )

Luckily, most kids don't notice when I start surreptitiously taking notes.

I saw you there on Goodreads! I keep meaning to blog about how much I love that site.
