Cybils Finalists

One of the most exciting things going on for me in the first week of the new year is the announcement of the Cybils finalists.

Why is this exciting? The Cybils are literary awards given by bloggers who write about books for children and teens (read more here). This is the Cybils’ second year, and it remains a wonderful, collaborative effort by a bunch of amazing, smart, and dedicated people I like and admire. In fact, one of those amazing, smart, and dedicated people I like and admire (Hi, Eisha!) asked me to serve on the judging panel for the Non-Fiction Picture Books category this year, and I couldn’t say yes quickly enough. Now that the finalists have been announced, I’ll be getting them all in a pile, reading them, rereading them, and writing notes on post-its in anticipation of discussing them with my colleagues on the committee. This is just the kind of thing my librarian self loves to do.

All of this is to say that I’m excited and also that those of you who enjoy children’s and teen books would do well to check out the finalists for all the categories. There are books I expected, and books that surprised me—I like that in a list. I also want to give a particular shout-out to my peeps on the Non-Fiction Picture Books Nominating Panel: Andrea from Just One More Book, Emily Beeson from Whimsy Books, Tricia Stohr-Hunt from The Miss Rumphius Effect, Fiona Bayrock from Books and Rocks, and Jennifer Schultz from Kiddosphere. They reviewed and discussed forty-six nominated titles to find the seven finalists: that is a LOT of work. Rock on, guys, and thanks!

Hey Adrienne,

Oh to be a fly on your judging yahoo group .. er .. wall.

You're going to have a great time. Can't wait for your Feb14 announcement.
