“I Live in a Giant Bucket”

Last night, Tammy and I went to see animator Don Hertzfeldt speak at the Dryden. They screened several of his shorts, including his two newest films—Everything Will Be Okay and I Am So Proud of You, which I hadn’t yet seen and are parts one and two of a planned trilogy. I love the good old shocking-and-violent Hertzfeldt, but he puts that talent to more meaningful use in his newest films. In the Q&A, he said that it’s going to be a while before he jumps into production on the third part of the trilogy. You know when you want to stand up and shout, “WHAT DO YOU MEAN? I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!!” I didn’t do this, though. I kind of felt bad for him because another audience member was only moments before pressuring him to reveal the meaning of life (which wasn’t SO out of left field, as one of Hertzfeldt’s films is called “The Meaning of Life,” but still). I guess I’ll have to console myself by catching up on Gossip Girl and Lost.

Gossip girl. Pssh.

So, I've never heard of him (not 'til you mentioned him in your kicks yesterday), and I started watching that with my girls sitting behind me, eating lunch. Sweet Jesus, indeed! I like to think I don't shelter them too much and that they are resilient, but I did stop it -- or postponed it for later viewing -- at the point in which someone's stomach got ripped out. Hee.

That's not a complaint either. I was laughing very hard. I think shooting fire from my nipples might come in handy sometimes.

I'll have to watch the rest later.

Jason, You. Haven't. Even. Watched. It. Loser.

Jules, Yeah, definitely not cartoons for the wee ones. The violence escalates, although I believe that for whatever reason he does bleep out most of the hard-core cursing.

The girls were fine. Didn't even flinch. It probably went right over their heads.

Pretty funny stuff. And, by the way, did you decide to continue onwards with Lost? Or are you giving up altogether?

I got the first disc of season 3 just today, so I guess I'm going to keep watching it. I feel all committed to it, and I'm very curious about what happens to these characters. I'm hoping to catch up to the present by the time it starts up again in January, but we'll see.

I liked the second one better because it was shorter.

So was his obscenely hot girlfriend in the audience again, or have you already submitted an application for the vacancy?

Chuck, His newer movies are longer, but they have a more narrative structure and are a little less absurd. I'm not sure if that would make you like them more or less.

Jen, The hot girlfriend was nowhere in sight. Ah, l'amour!

Yeah, simple absurdity isn't enough. The animation and sound is good, though.

It's even better on the DVD or live on film. Hertzfeldt was saying that his primary issue with people pirating his stuff on YouTube was the poor quality of the image/sound.

oh, my, Adrienne. Is this what latex balloons do to you, too? They try to kill you, after all.

Olivia, When I first saw that film, I thought, "FINALLY, someone who understands me." ;)
