Skeptical About Scholastic

This conversation with Lucas put me in mind of one of Susan’s recent posts over at Chicken Spaghetti.

Lucas: My book order came in yesterday!
Me: Really? What did you get?
Lucas: I’ll show you! [Rummaging through backpack. Pulls out Encyclopedia Horrifica: The Terrifying TRUTH! About Vampires, Ghosts, Monsters, and More by Joshua Gee.] I thought it was going to come with a skeleton guy, but there was just a picture on the back.
Me: Oh?
Lucas: Yeah, and they claim to have found the remains of a dead [Air quotes.] “mermaid.” [Makes disbelieving face.] Let me show you.

We wound up looking at the supposed remains of several dead mermaids. Lucas remains skeptical.

And, seriously, when did Lucas pick up air quotes?

Wow...not only did he pick up air quotes, but he used them properly! That's impressive.

How cute! I read a book recently where a guy claimed to have a dead mermaid. Company of Liars by Karen Maitland.

Mom, Lucas just seems bigger and bigger to me every day.

Sabrina, True, and now that I think of it, Tammy and I are given to using them from time-to-time to make fun of people. So he might have picked it up from us.

Lenore, I'll have to tell Lucas.
