What I Did in My Fun for 4s and 5s Storytime Today and How It Worked Out

“Two Little Blackbirds”
Ditto last week.

“Mr. Wiggle and Mr. Waggle”
Ditto last week, except more of the kids knew the story this week and so were able to participate more fully and enthusiastically. When it comes to repetition and storytime, there is no downside.

The Snake that Sneezed by Robert Leydenfrost
My favorite storytime book that is no longer in print, about a snake who bites off more than he can chew.

“I Saw a Snake Go By One Day”
Jason makes fun of this one, but the kids and I like it. So MEH.

Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh
This book is always a hit, and today I was pleasantly surprised by how many of the children in storytime knew what C-A-T spells.

“Sticky, Sticky Bubblegum”
Sometimes when I try to do a different song, the kids complain.

“Read This with Gestures” by John Ciardi
The kids were again completely delighted with this one.

“Funny Little Snowman”
I did this with puppets again, and the kids were all like, “THAT RABBIT DIDN’T REALLY EAT THAT SNOWMAN’S NOSE BECAUSE THAT SNOWMAN’S NOSE ISN’T REAL!” As opposed to the snowman puppet not being real. Or the bunny puppet not being real. It is the snowman puppet’s NOSE that isn’t real, you see.

A Hat for Minerva Louise by Janet Morgan Stoeke
Classic.

“Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree”
I like to start rhymes that count down by practicing counting forward and backward, and for the last few months, I’ve been starting to teach the kids to shout “BLASTOFF!” instead of zero when we get to the end. This is finally starting to pay off, as a few of the kids have started shouting “BLASTOFF!” without my prompting. Tee, hee, hee.

Bark, George by Jules Feiffer
For the first time ever, I had a child confused by the plot of this book. For the first several pages, he just kept saying, “But which one is George?” And I’d have to be like, “The puppy. Here.” And some of the other kids would be like, “The PUPPY! The PUPPY is George, but he’s MEOWING.”

I've definitely got to send this list of storytime books to Trish, she'll love it. And I actually recognize the one book "Mouse Paint", because Eli brought it to our house yesterday, along with 4 different colored mice.He really gets into his stories.......Thanks Adrienne!!

I love Minerva Louise. She's the greatest.

Jr. used to like "Sticky, Sticky Bubbblegum," too.

Linda, Ooo, I have a set of the colored mice, too!

Susan, I suppose Jr.'s too old and cool for "Sticky, Sticky Bubblegum" now. ;)
