Building Yourself Back Up After an Illness: A Recipe

1. Get yourself some freshly picked strawberries.
2. Pour some heavy cream into a ceramic bowl. I’d recommend about an eighth or quarter of a cup for every day you’ve been sick.
3. Use an electric mixer to beat the cream until it is almost perfect.
4. Pause to add a little vanilla and sugar.
5. Resume beating until the cream is perfect. If you overwhip the cream, it will be dry and sad and you might as well start over.
6. Wash, hull, and slice up the strawberries.
7. Throw the sliced up strawberries in the bowl with the whipped cream.
8. Stir gently. You can stop when the whipped cream starts to turn a little pink.
9. Eat it all before anyone else figures out what you’re up to.

I think #9 breaks down if once the balloon whisk comes into play. The walls have ears. And the walls apparently want strawberries and cream. Devon cream, if possible.

I have to admit the "hah-hah-hah, that's not lo-cal" version of this includes plain yogurt and... brown sugar. My dean in high school used to eat strawberries and brown sugar straight (a Midwestern thing?), but I prefer the yogurt to pretend that there's something healthful about the whole thing...

It's not the same with California strawberries.

Tanita, On a daily basis, rest assured that I am all strawberries, low-fat plain yogurt, and granola. :) If I ate whipped cream every day, there would be trouble.

Kelly, I wish I could somehow get some good strawberries to you. On the flip side, you guys have way less expensive avocados.

Vanilla makes anything taste better.

Man, does your recipe sound yummy.

I do love my vanilla, Jules. One time I used almond extract, too, and that was good.

Mmm. Also good. Drool. Maybe I should make some of that this weekend.

I like vanilla so much that I used to wear a vanilla oil. Body oil, that is. Like patchouli -- which is really what I wear anymore, though I sometimes get that vanilla oil back out. A child I used to babysit, NOW IN COLLEGE, used to call me "Patchouli Julie," but I digress.

(Sometimes I mix the patchouli AND the vanilla and wear that.)

Along the same lines, sometimes I bake/cook things just because I like the way it makes the house smell. Dehydrating fruit is turning out to be really good for this purpose. It makes the whole house smell divine.

Made this last night because I couldn't have ice cream with my farmer's market berries. It was a perfect substitute! Thanks for posting, Adrienne!

Bridget, And you can certainly afford a great, big helping. It's good to see you posting!
