Storytime in the Park, Week Two
It was warmer this week, but I was still chilly. Of course, I was also coming down with an infectious illness, so I might not be the best judge.
"Jump (High into the Air)"
My Friend is Sad by Mo Willems
This is my second-favorite Elephant & Piggie book to read aloud with Jason.
"Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree"
I don't know why I love borderline-violent fingerplays so much, but I do. In my defense, doing a familiar rhyme like this where people can chime in is a really good idea when you have an audience of 100 kids plus their parents in an acoustically-challenged pavilion in a park. Just in case this ever happens to you.
"BINGO"
Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas
Jason asked me to read this one aloud, which was generous, because I know he likes to read it almost as much as I do. This is one of the newest additions to our repertoire, so the audience still reacts quite strongly to it. LOTS of laughing.
"6 Little Ducks"
These videos Jason put on YouTube are very convenient for these entries.
"Sticky, Sticky Bubblegum"
Always a hit.
"Dear Mister Bear"
If Jason is ever sick for one of these joint storytimes, maybe I could just bring in a laptop and play his parts off YouTube.
Lemons are Not Red by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
At the time, my voice was cracking. I thought this was due to the fact that I was practically screaming to try to make sure the audience could hear me. Turns out my voice cracked because I was coming down with strep throat. Again. I did pretty freaking good, considering, and, thankfully, this was another participation story. I can't overemphasize the importance of participation stories in this kind of setting.
"The Hoppity Song" from For the Kids
Another perennial favorite (not on YouTube due to copyright restrictions).
