Quotable Wednesday

"Sometimes fiction is a way of coping with the poison of the world in a way that lets us survive it."
-Neil Gaiman, Newbery Medal Acceptance Speech, Horn Book Magazine (July/August 2009)

What a speech, eh? Best one since Kate DiCamillo's in 2004 (which I saw live, so it was probably better, at least a little).

Ooh, that one is going on my blog banner. It's so sad that I think he's a hottie. It's the accent. I'm so easy...

That's not sad, Tanita. We're all in love with him. Who can resist the accent and the fun geekiness?

Posted by: adrienne at August 12, 2009 02:50 PM

Um, he IS a hottie. And the quote, pure genius.

See? Vivian thinks so--it must be true.

I like Neil Gaiman as a person, and I like him as a writer, but he has never pushed my "hottie" buttons. My sexy British pop-fiction writer of choice is still Clive Barker.

AAAAAA! Need to resubscribe to the Horn Book. Need to resubscribe to the Horn Book.

Yes, Neil Gaiman is very hot! : )
He also just won the Hugo at WorldCon - yay!

Personal Demon, Clive Barker? Cool.

Jules, It is expensive. That's a downside.

Pat, He is having one heck of a year.

Ah! I wonder if ProQuest has the Gaiman speech yet. My favorite award speech so far is still Peggy Rathmann's for Officer Buckle and Gloria.

I don't think I've ever read the Rathmann speech. I'll have to look it up...

I found it and read it. You're right: it is good. Entertaining, and I love the story behind the book.
