"Humbug"

My newest column on the MCLS Website is about my tempestuous relationship with Christmas picture books. Read it here (or not, totally up to you and your mouse).

Oh, ugh. I have to say that when I was asked to review an MG Christmas book, I balked. I don't think the thematic thing goes past picture books, if that far -- so how would I be able to pitch that to a 12-year-old?? The book itself was not that bad, but... enough with the thematic stuff.

Oh, I MUST see Isadora's book! Thanks for the tip.

I read the Grinch tale to my girls, at their request, the other night. At about midnight, the wee'est got up and cried and asked if we could please just remove the book from her room. Aw, man. I felt so bad about it. But one never knows how a book will affect a child...now or later.

Between you and Jules, I'm gonna have to check out Lauren Thompson's book already. I do like Frazee's book, and the whole idea of portraying Mr. Claus as a real person. Thanks for the recs!

Tanita, I don't even try to read the chapter books, except The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which is awesome. I also liked Andrew Clements' Christmas book.

Jules, Kids can be so weird about stuff. Maybe she had a bad dream about something else and decided to blame the Grinch?

Jama, You're welcome--thanks for reading!

Oh and p.s.: Another new holiday title I like that makes me (and my girls) laugh is THE GINGERBREAD PIRATES by Kristin Kladstrup (ill. by Matt Tavares).
