Movies that Tim Burton Has Directed and that I Have Seen, from Awesomest to Least Awesome

Today, I accepted an invitation to serve on the 2011 Batchelder Award Committee. I was so excited about this turn of events, that I decided to celebrate by going to see The Nutcracker and the Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA in NYC this weekend. Some people might point out that I bought those tickets WEEKS ago, but those people should just remember that Santa is watching them.

Anyway, I am pretty excited about this Tim Burton thing. Here goes with my best-to-worst list of movies Tim Burton has directed (that I’ve seen—I’m missing a major one):

Edward Scissorhands
Beetlejuice
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Big Fish
Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
Mars Attacks!
Corpse Bride
Batman
Batman Returns
Sleepy Hollow
Planet of the Apes
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The thing about Tim Burton is that the first five movies on my list are so good, I had trouble picking which order they should go in. Conversely, the last four movies on the list are so bad that I had trouble picking which order they should go in. (I know this is not a popular opinion, but I actually liked that original Batman movie he did, and I thought that new-fangled Batman Begins was boring. There, I said it. Boooorrrrrring.)

Ooooh. Big Fish. Oooh, Edward Scissorhands.

Ooh. Tim Burton.

But, wait. Corpse Bride or Nightmare Before Christmas you haven't seen? Or do those count?

BTW: the Batchelder Award? Is awesome.

You are right about those last four--I'd add 2 more though. Also, you are spot on(:-) about the Batman thing.Enjoy the exhibit and go ahead and look at the NYC X-mas decorations!

Congrats again!! SQUEE! Very exciting.

Okay, wait. Where's Ed Wood? Where oh where? Have you seen it? Did you not like it? Oh, I just loved that film. I skimmed some article about Johnny Depp the other day, too, where he talked about how much he loved that role.

Yeah, you really should see Ed Wood. I think that Mars Attacks should be lower. It's one of those really high concept TB films that simply doesn't work. I always want it to be hilarious and it never is.

Tanita, I think he didn't direct Nightmare; I think he produced it. I love that movie, though. Maybe I'll do a second list of movies he's produced.

The rest of you are right about my glaring error in not having seen Ed Wood. I have it at home but didn't get to watch it this week. When I get home, I will.

Love the list. I would put Sweeney Todd on top. I remember watching Ed Wood long ago (15 yrs ago?) and thinking: weird, wild, wonderful. That's been my reaction to Burton and Depp ever since.
