Quotes from Books I Read in 2009 (Which Were Not Necessarily Published in 2009)

These houses had been plunked down with an alarming randomness—unevenly spaced, on crooked lines, like whoever had designed the place had said, “We’ll just follow this cat, and wherever he sits down, we’ll build something.”
-Jubilee in “The Jubilee Express” by Maureen Johnson in Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances

Nick had little imagination, and he was not about to start thinking now.
-The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

So instead of acknowledging applause, I stand there unmoving while they take part in the boldest form of dissent they can manage. Silence. Which says we do not agree. We do not condone. All of this is wrong.
-Katniss in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Thinking.
This book contains some. Whether you try it at home is up to you.
-Nation by Terry Pratchett

“Yike!” said Sam. Sam had taken to saying “Yike” often lately, seeing that the underneath of his crib was inhabited by a monster.
-Lulu Atlantis and the Quest for True Blue Love by Patricia Martin

See, as much as you want to hold on to the bitter sore memory that someone has left this world, you are still in it. And the very act of living is a tide: at first it seems to make no difference at all, and then one day you look down and see how much pain has eroded.
-Kate in My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

“Yeah, well, who but the mad would choose to keep on living? In the end, aren’t we all just a little crazy?”
-Dulcie in Going Bovine by Libba Bray

Sometimes you never feel meaner than the moment you stop being mean. It’s like how turning on a light makes you realize how dark the room had gotten. And the way you usually act, the things you would have normally done, are like these ghosts that everyone can see but pretends not to.
-Miranda in When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

“I thought that would be obvious enough. The entrance to the Underworld is in Los Angeles.”
-Chiron in The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

No wonder so many famous scientists have been loners. All this human interaction takes up way too much time.
-Cat in Fat Cat by Robin Brande

I think about how much depends upon a best friend. When you wake up in the morning you swing your legs out of bed and you put your feet on the ground and you stand up. You don’t scoot to the edge of the bed and look down to make sure the floor is there. The floor is always there.
-Will Grayson in Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan (advance reader copy)

Lulu!

I really want to read GOING BOVINE already.

Well, Going Bovine is a big commitment, but I did love every single page. It's surreal and funny and absolutely true.

Well, I live in LA and it may very well be the entrance to the Underworld! BUT it is warmer than where you are. My parents live close to your library. I may show up and introduce myself one of these days. Upstate NY is wonderful. I was born in Brockport. Keep warm.

Martha, It's a small world, and I'd love it if you popped in the library one of these days! I grew up in Hamlin, so I have spent a whole lot of time in Brockport through the years. (Actually, I was just there this morning shopping for calendars at Lift Bridge Books.)

I spent time in LA last winter, and I have to say I enjoyed myself there thoroughly. That line in The Lightning Thief did make me laugh, though. A lot of authors seem to set terrible things happening in LA. I'm not sure why.

My parents live in Spencerport on the Erie Canal. My mom loves to watch the boats come through. My daughter is visiting there now and enjoying the snow. She only has to live in it a week. She's a So Cal girl who hardly goes a day without flip flops!

I've been to that bookstore!! small world.....

Authors say terrible things happen in LA because they really do! But libraries are about the same every where - interesting patrons and interesting administrations. :)

It hasn't stopped snowing here for two days now--those great, big, white flakes--so she's getting quite a show.
