Ways to Lose an Hour
I obviously have a bit of a reputation where daylight savings is concerned because every single person I have seen or talked to in the last 24 hours has reminded me to spring ahead tonight. Around 5:00, I decided that if I was going to lose an hour of my weekend, I might as well lose it already, so I turned the clocks ahead early. Then I put on my pajamas and started making dinner because, hey, it was 6:00. By the time I’d finished the Béchamel sauce for the vegetable gratin I was making, I looked at the clock and thought, “Wow, it got late quick.” Then I remembered that it was just daylight savings.
When I turned the timer off on the oven when the gratin was ready to come out, I thought, “Wow, it got late quick.” Then I remembered it was just daylight savings.
When I got done washing the dishes, I noticed the clock and thought, “Wow, it got late quick.” And then I remembered yadda, yadda, yadda. It’s been happening ALL NIGHT.
I could use this as an opportunity to complain about daylight savings or to meditate on the fluidity of time as a construct or to expound on exactly how hopeless my sense of time really is. Instead, I’d like to tell you that the vegetable gratin I made was freaking awesome.
But daylight savings really is stupid. Arizona has the right idea ignoring it.

LOL! Hawaii ignores it too. Mmmmm on the vegetable gratin.

I've always thought Daylight Saving Time is a fine example of democracy not in action. WE ALL HATE IT, and yet it stands. Now, why is that? Is it not our country? Can we not rise up and shriek to the Time Lords about this or something? WHY ARE WE STILL DOING IT?
Your root veg gratin sounds FAB. This is way I usually dispose of random root veg; I find that delicata or acorn squash works just as nicely as butternut -- better, actually. 'Tis quite tasty!

Agreed on Arizona. Doesn't Indiana have it right, too? I'll have to look it up.
Unlike the rest of the world, I prefer this time change and hate the fall one. One hour of extra sleep does not make up for having to leave work after dark, thus almost never being outside in daylight for 4-5 months.(I suppose there are still weekends, but still.)
The vegetable gratin looks yummy.

Jama, I have got to visit Hawaii one of these days.
Tanita, Yum, and I am in possession of a number of root vegetables at the moment. This is the last week of my winter CSA, and that timing's feeling just about right.
Laura, I do find it hard to be without light. I am up very early here, so I was really appreciating the early morning sun, which is going to be MIA for a bit. It will come along with spring. My daffodils are a good couple inches out of the ground now.

I had no idea some states didn't do daylight savings time! When we lived in the UAE we didn't. I used to hate springing forward but man it's so nice to have longer days! It brings in such a dramatic change to our lifestyle. Thank god Spring is nearing!

Cheryl, I really am enjoying the longer days. We had several sunny days in a row here last week, and it really elevated my mood. Now, on the cloudy days (we've had several in a row), all I want to do is drink coffee and sulk.
