It has a pattern, but it also moves all over the keyboard and has these great big crazy chords and is a lot of fun to play. It’s also difficult–for me, anyway. I’ve been working on it for weeks now, and I have about two pages of the thing learned. The lyrics are great, per usual with our Fiona. It’s a song about worth not coming from achievement but from humanity. “If you don’t have a point to make,” she … Read the rest

I’m currently learning “Waltz (Better Than Fine)” by Fiona Apple on my piano. I love so much about this song. “If you don’t have a point to make,” she sings, “don’t sweat it. You make a sharp one being so kind.” She sings of acceptance of herself, but she’s throwing that out to anyone who cares to listen, too.

Another thing I love about this song is the notation on the sheet music I have. At one point, a note says, “Here is where your imaginary orchestra sets in.” And of course it does. My imaginary orchestra is always there soundtracking my life. (It was playing some awesome music last night when I got caught in a thunder-and-lightning deluge at the Corporate Challenge, but that’s another story.) When I run into people who are like “Eh, I don’t really listen to music,” my internal reaction is, HOW DO YOU LIVE? It’s like people who say they don’t read or go to museums or like the theatre. That’s basically all I do.

This past Sunday, the library marched in the Henrietta Memorial Day Parade, an annual tradition the staff hates. I didn’t hate it. We walked for a couple miles on a beautiful day while a couple bands played us appropriately regal-sounding music and people waved and cheered at us. What is wrong with that? I’d do that every day if I could, but some days you have to make your own music. Or maybe just go out and sit on the lawn and do nothing, like Fiona says.

Last summer when I was attempting to sell my house, my vacuum cleaner broke. It happened right before an open house, so not only did I have to deal with my sudden lack of vacuum cleaning power, but the incident also filled the downstairs with that melting-plastic scent that smells exactly the opposite of Buy This House. I was outraged, of course, even though it was pretty clear that the 20-year-old Panasonic upright that was mostly held together with duct tape and electrical tape (from all those times I vacuumed the power cord) should have been retired before it started emitting smoke.

Per usual, Tammy and Ron saved me.

It turned out that they had a Dyson vacuum cleaner in their basement that they hated and weren’t using. My favorite electronics are the ones I don’t have to buy, so I adopted the Dyson, and we’ve been living happily together ever since.

Except when it comes time to empty the Dyson.

Dyson vacuum cleaners, as you perhaps know, are bagless, and every time I have to empty the thing, it’s like I’ve never done it before. There are a LOT of buttons on the vacuum, and I approach this task as I do so many tasks–by hitting a lot of buttons until what I want to happen starts happening.

Did you ever watch the Transformers cartoon when you were a kid? Remember how the Transformers would transform themselves, and it would make that weird scratchy-record sound while they were transforming? (Here’s an example.) That’s basically how it goes with the Dyson. When you hit the right button on the Dyson, suddenly a bunch of parts all start moving and then there’s the vacuum vomiting out all the dirt and cat hair and whatnot you’ve been vacuuming up for the past month or two. If you’re wise, you’ve put a trash bag under the vacuum to deal this this. If you’re me, you leave the trash bag off to the side, so that your cat comes and lies down on it to quietly mock you while you make a huge mess of the hallway.

After I cleaned all that up, I went out for a walk, and that was nice.

So this is what happened.

On the first leg of my flight out west back in March, I started writing a response to Brandon grading us on our quizzes (Remember that back in the olden days?), but then I got stuck overnight in Detroit, which goofed up the beginning of my trip and derailed all my bloggy plans. A quick note now: Brandon, I loved that you graded us on our posts, and you are so right that I also read Manohla Dargis in the NYT. I always forget things when I try to make lists. You guys are all way better at that than I am.

Also, you guys all saw and talked about Spring Breakers when I was on that trip. I have no interest in seeing that movie, but I wanted to mention how much I enjoyed John’s post about it. I suspect it’s better than the film itself.

But, seriously, who watches movies anymore? Let’s talk about TV.

On the aforementioned trip out west, my friends Tanita and David introduced me to The Middleman, which is an ABC Family show that only ran for one season. I know that makes it sound like it would be lame, but it is one of the funniest shows I’ve watched in a long time–sharp and witty and fast-paced. I’ve watched the whole run and am still attempting to deal with my grief over the severe lack of a second season. It feels very Firefly to me.

Then there’s all the TV I’ve been watching with Amy and Arthur.

We finally got through season one of Game of Thrones, which I enjoyed–not as much as the book, but still. Some moments play out better on film than they do in the book, like Ned’s death, which almost made me cry when we watched it, even though I knew full well it was coming. We aren’t going to watch season 2 until Amy and I are done reading the second book. (Arthur’s already read all the books and watched all the shows because he’s kind of an overachiever that way.)

Now that we’re on a GoT rest break, we’re watching three shows concurrently: Maron, season 3 of Louie, and Soap.

You all know I’m a crazy Marc Maron fan, and so I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that I’ve already heard a lot of what I’ve seen in the first two episodes of Maron. Still, I think the thing has promise. The second episode is notably better than the first, and I like a lot of the details on the show. The set design is particularly good, and, you know, I like Marc.

Speaking of which, John, no more Mehroning out of you over there.

Louie continues to be brilliant, my current favorite show.

When I was about five years old, my favorite TV shows were Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, Little House on the Prairie, and Soap. So I was super-excited to see that Arthur had discovered Soap and obtained it on DVD. We’ve watched two episodes so far. The last time I rewatched the series was probably about 20 years ago, when I was in college and made my late husband watch it (he wasn’t late then), and it still makes me laugh a lot. Maybe even more than Louie.

All this is making me think I should make a list of my all-time favorite TV shows, but maybe we did that at some point? I was going to say that we’re the most disorganized Film Club That Seems to Have Turned Into a TV Club ever, but, really, it might just be me who’s disorganized. About this, anyway.

Now I have to get back to Clash of Kings.
