Robert’s Snow: Featuring Wendy Edelson
As Little Willow might say, KITTIES!
“Expectation” by Wendy Edelson will be featured in Auction 2 of Robert’s Snow from November 26-30. “Expectation” is a perfect title, both for the piece and the spirit of this fundraisier. I love the way Wendy used the shape of the snowflake here, and, yes, you are seeing rhinestones and crystals.
To tell you the truth, I was completely unfamiliar with Wendy’s work when I asked to feature her as part of Blogging for a Cure, and I’ve really been enjoying learning a thing or two. Wendy has a great website, and she was very kind when I contacted her. Of this piece, she says:
“ I really wanted to work with the shape of the snowflake, and not simply adhere a piece of art to the shape. My image is done in watercolor and was cut out and mounted onto the snowflake, and on the finished piece there is 3D snow made of acrylic modeling gel and painted the same blues and white as the image on the edges of the snowflake, all around the edges. I’d never used that medium before and it was kind of like frosting a cake. I had a lot of fun creating this as everything I usually do is 2 dimensional.”
Wendy was excited to participate in Robert’s Snow when she was asked. She says, “I think it’s a wonderful charity and felt so sad when Robert passed away. My son passed away due to complications after a double transplant for CF and so it was important for me to give in some way to research for something so devastating.”
That is the kind of spirit that keeps this world running.
Wendy is currently working on illustrations for two picture books: Saturn for My Birthday by John McGranaghan (to be released in Fall 2008) and Pobble’s Way by Simon Van Booy (release TBD). I, for one, will be waiting.

What a delightful snowflake! I was just commenting on how I enjoyed the artists who used the shape of the snowflake to define the shape of their image. Absolutely wonderful. I just visited her website. What a prolific illustrator! I bookmarked it so I can visit again. There's so much to see. I love the detail in her work.

Man, I wish I could BUY that snowflake for Little Willow. For serious.
I love how she put it: that she didn't want to adhere a piece of art to the shape. Isn't it fascinating to see how different artists worked with the same five-inch piece of wood?
Adrienne, thanks for being involved in this. I know it meant a lot to you, in particular. Your features were always fun to read. That sounds trite, but I mean it.

I like this. There is nothing more unnerving than the eyes of a cat, expecting something!!
